Only In Canada: Flight Delayed Due to Hockey
March 11, 2010
Air Canada President Calin Rovinescu told a gathering of Vancouver businessmen yesterday that they “incurred a flight delay for a reason Air Canada had not yet encountered in over 72 years of existence.” Inclimate weather and mechanical delays are common pains for air travellers. So was it snow? Fog? Mechanical problems? No.
Hockey.
A Vancouver to Montreal flight was delayed as passengers ignored repeated calls to board so they could watch the end of the Canada vs. USA gold medal hockey game on airport televisions, including departure information screens.
The plane simply sat on the tarmac until the game’s epic climax in overtime, with the flight crew advising passengers onboard of the game with updates they were receiving from operations control. Once the game had finished, the rest of the passengers boarded and the plane departed, no doubt with a chorus of O’ Canada from the flight deck to the back of coach.
